Every attachment adds weight and changes the load center of the forklift. This reduces the machine's rated lift capacity. The Most Common Forklift Attachments
A side shifter allows the operator to move the forks laterally left and right from the cab without repositioning the machine. This sounds like a small convenience but makes a significant difference in daily productivity. Without a side shifter, operators have to inch the forklift forward and back repeatedly to align with a pallet. With one, alignment takes a second.

A push-pull attachment is used in operations that use slip sheets instead of pallets. A slip sheet is a thin sheet of plastic, paperboard, or corrugated material that sits under the load in place of a pallet. The push-pull attachment grips the edge of the slip sheet and slides the load onto a platen for transport, then pushes it off at the destination.
Slip sheet handling eliminates the cost and weight of pallets and increases storage density because loads sit lower. The trade-off is that push-pull attachments require a high degree of operator skill and a smooth floor surface to function reliably.

Bucket and scoop attachments convert a forklift into a loader-style machine capable of scooping and transporting loose bulk materials such as sand, gravel, salt, grain, wood chips, or similar products. They mount in place of the forks and are designed for outdoor or industrial use.
It is worth noting that bucket attachments are not appropriate for all forklift types. Counterbalance forklifts with pneumatic tires are the typical candidate. Using a bucket attachment on a cushion-tire indoor machine is generally unsafe and outside the machine's design parameters.

Fork extensions are steel sleeves that slide over the existing forks to increase their length. They are used when a load is wider or longer than the standard forks can safely support. Common applications include lumber, long pipe or conduit, sheet goods, and oversized pallets.
Fork extensions are subject to important safety limits. OSHA and most manufacturers specify that extensions should not exceed 1.5 times the length of the original fork. Longer extensions shift the load center significantly and reduce effective lift capacity. They should only be used occasionally, not as a permanent configuration, and must be rated for the load being carried.

Things to Know Before Adding an Attachment
Capacity Derating Is Mandatory
Every attachment changes the effective lift capacity of the forklift. The manufacturer's nameplate capacity applies to the standard configuration. Adding an attachment shifts the load center and adds carriage weight, both of which reduce safe working capacity. Before using any attachment in production, obtain the revised capacity rating from the manufacturer or a qualified dealer and update the capacity nameplate on the machine. Operating at the original rated capacity with an attachment installed is unsafe and non-compliant.
Operator Training Matters
OSHA requires that forklift operators be trained on the specific equipment they operate, including attachments. An operator certified on a standard counterbalance forklift is not automatically qualified to operate the same machine with a clamp or rotator. Attachment-specific training should be documented and kept on file.
Not All Attachments Fit All Forklifts
Attachments are mounted via a standard carriage interface, but they are not universally interchangeable. The attachment must be matched to the forklift's carriage class, hydraulic flow rate, and weight capacity. An attachment sized for a 5,000-pound machine may not function correctly or safely on a 3,000-pound machine. Always verify compatibility before purchasing or renting an attachment.
